OUR FIBRES

Cotton you can count on
By buying cotton products from us, you‘re supporting more sustainable cotton farming via the Better Cotton Initiative. Better Cotton™ is sourced via a chain of custody model called mass balance. This means that Better Cotton is not physically traceable to end products, however, Better Cotton farmers benefit from the demand for Better Cotton in equivalent volumes to those we ‘source’.

Traceable cashmere from certified farms
We can trace 100% of the fibres in our pure cashmere styles to farms in Inner Mongolia. Boden is a proud partner of the Good Cashmere Standard® which certifies our cashmere and supports three pillars:
1 | Goats: Understanding the well-being of goats involves considering their nutrition, environment, health, behaviour, and mental state.
2 | Herders: The standard includes criteria regarding the planning of animal welfare maintenance and the recording of the outcomes.
3 | Environment: The protection of the environment in which cashmere goats, herders and herder communities live is one of the centra aims of The Good Cashmere Standard®. One of the key principles is that goat keeping should have no negative impact on the land and biodiversity.

Sourcing leather responsibly
We've been members of the Leather Working Group (LWG) since 2020 – an initiative that addresses the environmental impact of leather production within the leather supply chain.
LWG guarantees that our suppliers resource efficiently while reducing waste generation and emissions to the environment. It also looks to improving chemical management and ensures use of non-hazardous chemicals. LWG works against deforestation and improves animal welfare and employee working conditions, too.

Premium yarns you can trust
Boden has been Responsible Wool Standard and Responsible Mohair Standard certified since 2023, and Responsible Alpaca Standard certified since 2024.
At the farm level this standard addresses animal welfare, land management and social welfare. The identity of the certified material is preserved through a robust chain of custody system. Certified by Ecocert Greenlife SAS. TE-00266978

Bringing you the very best cellulosic fibres
LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose, TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibres certified with the EU Ecolabel have a reduced environmental impact across multiple stages of the product life cycle*. The fibres are derived from the natural raw material wood. *EU Ecolabel for textile products (license no. AT/016/001)
LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose fibre production processes are continuously refined to maximise resource efficiency and minimise environmental impact. Consequently, carbon emissions and water consumption of LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibres are at least 50% lower compared to generic viscose fibres, according to Higg MSI.^According to the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (MSI), LENZING™ ECOVERO™ fibre has a significantly lower environmental impact than generic viscose in the categories of abiotic depletion of fossil fuels (up to 61%), global warming (up to 61%), water consumption (up to 66%) and eutrophication (up to 10%).
*Results based on LCA standards (ISO 14040/44) and available via Higg MSI Version 3.9.1 (December 2024).
TENCEL™ Lyocell fibres are produced in a closed loop process which recovers 99.8% of the solvent – resulting in close-to-zero wastage. The responsible production of TENCEL™ Lyocell and Modal fibres uses at least 50% less water and emits at least 50% less greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to generic lyocell and modal fibres, according to Higg MS2, saving precious resources for future generations.
*Results based on LCA standards (ISO 14040/44) and available via Higg MSI (Version 3.8).

European premium linen
Linen has always been a big deal for Boden. Its fibres are sourced from the flax plant which has a low impact on the environment. Three- quarters of the world's flax plants are grown on our doorstep on a wide coastal strip along the English Channel, in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The region’s naturally humid oceanic climate, its generous soils and the farmers’ long-established expertise contribute to the excellence of European Flax™. GMO-free and grown without the need for irrigation in 99.9% of cases, European Flax™ is a fully traceable, zero-waste crop.
Adding recycled fibres to the mix
Linen is already one of our lowest impact fabrics and to reduce this further we ensure our 100% linen fabric contains 20% of recycled pre-consumer linen waste sourced from the production process.

RECYCLED DENIM
Reducing environmental impact
To reinforce our commitment to transparency and accountability in sustainable fashion we’ve implemented the Environmental Impact Measurement (EIM) system. This innovative tool allows us to track and record the environmental impact of each denim wash. The use of EIM has helped us shift toward more responsible denim washing techniques that significantly reduce water and chemical usage. These improvements not only reduce the environmental footprint of each garment, but also support safer working conditions in production facilities.
Adding recycled cotton to the mix
We use 20% recycled cotton in all our denim because it’s the ideal balance between sustainability and performance. By adding recycled cotton we support circular fashion and reduce demand for virgin resources – without compromising the comfortable, high-quality feel, fit and finish that our customers expect.

How we use recycled synthetic fibres
While we prioritise the use of natural fibres, recycled synthetics have important performance properties that improve the functionality and durability of certain products. We use certified recycled synthetics to make outerwear water repellent (or waterproof) and to give our swimwear the stretch and elasticity it needs to perform underwater and in your washing machine.
Styles certified to the Global Recycled Standard contain recycled material that has been independently verified at each stage of the supply chain, from the source to the final product. In addition, factories and everyone involved, from the source to final supplier, have met social, environmental, and chemical requirements. Certified by Ecocert Greenlife SAS. TE-00266978
